Trincomalee

A town on the east coast, known for whale watching in its own season.

Illustrative image

Trincomalee is on the east coast, which has its own weather and its own season. It is a place to add to a journey when the west and south are in their rainy months.

Blue whales are watched off Trincomalee for part of the year. We treat whale watching as a chance and never a promise, and we choose operators with care.

What to expect

  • The east coast and its own season
  • Whale watching, in its season
  • A counterpart to the south coast
  • Time by the sea away from the busiest places

When and how

  • Blue whales are watched off Trincomalee mainly between March and July. Sightings are never guaranteed, so we keep the day flexible.
  • The north-east monsoon, from December to February, rains mainly on the eastern half of the island. We plan around it, and we check the position for your dates.
  • Whale watching is regulated and monitoring has been reported as weak, so we choose operators who follow the rules and keep a respectful distance.

Travel responsibly

  • Choose operators who follow the rules and never chase or crowd the animals
  • Take your litter back and avoid single-use plastic on the boat
  • Respect the local community and ask before taking photographs of people
