Sigiriya and Dambulla

A ruined royal capital on a granite rock above the forest, and a living cave temple close by.

Illustrative image

Sigiriya is the ruined capital built by King Kassapa I in the 5th century. It lies on the slopes and summit of a granite peak about 180 metres high, the Lion's Rock, reached by galleries and staircases that emerge from the mouth of a huge lion made of brick and plaster.

Close by, the Rangiri Dambulla Cave Temple is a living Buddhist site built around five cave shrines, where forest-dwelling monks have lived since the 3rd century BCE. Both are on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

What to expect

  • The Lion's Rock and the ruins on its summit
  • Galleries and staircases rising from a giant brick and plaster lion
  • The Dambulla cave temple, with five cave shrines
  • Forest, lakes and countryside around the rock

When and how

  • The climb is open-air, so we plan it for the early morning or late afternoon and keep the middle of the day for rest.
  • Tickets for Sigiriya are issued by the Central Cultural Fund, which also offers an online eTicket order.
  • A guide who knows the stories brings the ruins to life. Tell us if you would rather spend longer at one site than see several.

Travel responsibly

  • Do not touch, climb on or write on ancient walls and structures
  • Follow the rules posted at each site and the instructions of staff
  • Take your litter with you and stay on the marked paths
