Tea country & mountains

Tea country & mountains

Cool hill-country air, tea estates, walks and one of the island's most scenic train rides.

Illustrative image

Inland, the island climbs into green hills terraced with tea. Mornings are misty, the air is cooler and the pace slows.

Days here can mean walking through tea estates, hiking to a viewpoint, or simply taking the train and watching the scenery change from the window.

When and how

  • The hill country has its own rain pattern: the south-west monsoon brings heavy rain there between June and August, so we plan walks and viewpoints around the weather.
  • A scenic rail leg is a highlight, and seats are reserved through the railway, so we raise it early when we plan your dates.
  • If you would like to climb Adam's Peak, the pilgrimage season sets the best time. Tell us and we will fit it to your dates.

Travel responsibly

  • Stay on paths in tea estates and ask before entering working fields
  • Greet and photograph estate workers only with their agreement
  • Carry your litter off trails and viewpoints

Practical facts

Each fact comes with its source and the date we last checked it. Rules and conditions change, so please confirm them before you travel.

  • Sri Lanka has two monsoons. The south-west monsoon (May to September) brings most of its rain to the south-west and the hill country; the north-east monsoon (December to February) rains mainly on the eastern half of the island. In the months between, October to November and March to April, showers can fall anywhere. Conditions vary from year to year.

  • Sri Lanka Railways runs an online seat-reservation portal where you can create an account and reserve seats on trains. How far ahead seats can be reserved is set by the railway, so check the current rules before you plan a scenic rail leg.

  • The Adam's Peak (Sri Pada) pilgrimage season runs from the December full moon (Unduvap Poya) to the May full moon (Vesak Poya), with the most climbers in January and February. The climb is still possible outside the season, but bring a torch.
