Wildlife safari

Early-morning jeep safaris where elephants, leopards and birdlife are part of the landscape.

Sri Lanka's national parks are some of the best places in Asia to see wild elephants, and some also offer a chance of a leopard. Safaris usually start at first light, when the air is cool and the animals are most active.

It is as much about patience and atmosphere as about sightings: the birds, the light, the sound of the forest waking up.

When and how

  • Safaris usually run at first and last light, when the animals are most active and the air is cooler.
  • Parts of some parks close in the dry season, so we check the position for your dates and plan around it.
  • Sightings are never guaranteed. We build in more than one safari so that one quiet drive does not decide the trip.

Travel responsibly

  • Keep a respectful distance, stay quiet and never feed the animals
  • Follow the park rules and the guidance of rangers and guides
  • Prefer small groups: fewer vehicles at a sighting means less disturbance

Practical facts

Each fact comes with its source and the date we last checked it. Rules and conditions change, so please confirm them before you travel.

  • Parts of Yala National Park can close to visitors in the dry season, to protect wildlife and for maintenance. The Department of Wildlife Conservation decides this each year and the dates change, so check the current position before booking a safari.

  • Sri Lanka has two monsoons. The south-west monsoon (May to September) brings most of its rain to the south-west and the hill country; the north-east monsoon (December to February) rains mainly on the eastern half of the island. In the months between, October to November and March to April, showers can fall anywhere. Conditions vary from year to year.
