Walking

Guided hiking and trails

Walks through the highlands and rainforest, planned at your pace and checked against the current rules.

The highlands and the rainforest are best met on foot. Sri Lanka's Central Highlands and the Sinharaja forest are both World Heritage natural sites, and the hill country around them is crossed by tea paths, ridge walks and pilgrim trails.

We plan walking days around your fitness and your pace, with time to stop for the view, for tea and for the weather to clear. A walk is always one part of a journey, never the whole of it.

When and how

  • Walks usually start early, when the air is cooler and the views are clearest. We plan around the monsoon seasons, because the weather decides which side of the island is best on which dates.
  • We tell you what a walk asks of you, in plain words, and we choose routes that suit your fitness. Easier alternatives are always possible if the weather or the group changes the plan.
  • Many protected areas have their own rules on guides, permits and access. We check these with the park or forest office for your dates and arrange them with you, rather than assume.

Travel responsibly

  • Stay on the marked paths and follow the guidance of your guide and the rangers
  • Carry out everything you carry in, especially plastic, and never pick plants or disturb animals
  • Respect the sacred places: pilgrim routes are in use by people who walk them as an act of faith

Practical facts

Each fact comes with its source and the date we last checked it. Rules and conditions change, so please confirm them before you travel.

  • The Central Highlands of Sri Lanka, inscribed in 2010, are a natural property made up of three parts: the Peak Wilderness Protected Area, Horton Plains National Park and the Knuckles Conservation Forest. They hold the largest and least disturbed remaining areas of the island's submontane and montane rain forest.

  • Sinharaja Forest Reserve holds the last extensive patch of primary lowland rainforest in Sri Lanka. It covers 8,864 hectares in the south-west wet zone, at altitudes of 300 to 1,170 metres, and was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1988.

  • The Adam's Peak (Sri Pada) pilgrimage season runs from the December full moon (Unduvap Poya) to the May full moon (Vesak Poya), with the most climbers in January and February. The climb is still possible outside the season, but bring a torch.

  • Sri Lanka has two monsoons. The south-west monsoon (May to September) brings most of its rain to the south-west and the hill country; the north-east monsoon (December to February) rains mainly on the eastern half of the island. In the months between, October to November and March to April, showers can fall anywhere. Conditions vary from year to year.
